Rochester United Neighborhoods (RUN) is a city-wide initiative to proudly claim ownership and responsibility
for our neighborhoods and the city at large. RUN is a grassroots network made up of citizens and elected officials committed to reducing
crime and fear of crime, improving quality of life and building community. Together we develop the capacity to respond creatively
to any and all concerns, problems and crises that occur.
Our ability to respond is strengthened as we:· Create
communication networks in neighborhoods; Enhance the cooperation and communication between existing resources; Provide neighborhood
training in the areas of dialogue, problem solving and conflict resolution; Increase public knowledge of existing resources; and·
Engage youth in the planning process and provide community activities to build relationships and promote neighborliness.
RUN is part of the Police Departments Community Policing Initiative. Each neighborhood has a police supervisor and a group of officers.
Police are present at neighborhood meetings and committed to assisting with neighborhood education and community building activities.
What we can do: Educate ourselves and others, Get to know our neighbors/neighborhood; Find out what is available for youth and what
is needed; Cooperate with police and other city officials. Communication and networking.
Crime prevention
and public safety have been identified by the neighborhoods as areas to focus on. To allow us to address all three areas, we hold
neighborhood meetings to focus on Community Education, Community Service, and Community Building.
We live
as equals, practicing and expecting respect. We work together to solve problems, promote justice, protect the elderly, support recovery,
and advocate for youth. We play together to grow community spirit and generate a sense of belonging for everyone. We ask everyone
to contribute to the lasting success of our unique community Meetings.
The City is divided up into 6 Wards.
Ward meetings are currently held on a monthly basis in each Ward. The key to success is communication and coordination. Neighborhood
meetings are key to grassroots participation, and work best when they are Purposeful enough to educate, Inspiring enough to motivate,
and Long enough to deliberate.
RUN can help coordinate activities, better align resources, uncover new resources,
leverage mutually supportive actions, and track and celebrate results. RUN allows a community to bring together the right people,
set the right climate, establish shared visions and priorities, increase resources through collaboration and cooperation, and aim
toward solving problems and implementing solutions. It takes teamwork, and everyone can participate! There are many levels at which
neighbors and citizens can get involved.
The Rochester Police Department has asked that we all get involved
in building a safe community. Report suspicious activity, Watch out for our neighbors, Get involved with youth, Join your neighborhood
RUN group. We believe that working together, we can make a difference.
