On Saturday July 25, 2020, around 3:05 am, Rochester Police arrested the male wanted in connection with a shooting early Friday morning at a homeless camp that left one female hospitalized.
Police received an anonymous tip that a male matching the description of the shooting suspect was seen on South Main St in the area of the Rochester Commons. While responding to an unrelated call for service at that same time in that area, an Officer noticed the male suspect and turned around to apprehend him. The male began to run, however was quickly taken into custody by the Officer in the area of Rochester One Stop gas station.
Police arrested Michael Berencsi, age 48, a local transient, on the active warrant from Friday’s shooting incident charging him with Second Degree Assault with a Firearm, Criminal Threatening with a Deadly Weapon, and Violation of Protective Order.
In addition to those charges, Berencsi was also arrested on an active warrant charging him with Violation of Protective Order and Criminal Trespass stemming from a separate incident on Friday July 17, 2020.
Berencsi refused bail and was transported to Strafford County Jail where he will await arraignment on Monday July 27, 2020 at 12:00pm.
